There has been a steady stream of rumors over the past year that search-engine giant Google may be interesting in pairing up with or buying online real estate search company Trulia.
Kara Swisher of Boomtown | All Things Digital wonders if the rumors are true:
Trulia–which is based in San Francisco and allows people to search for a range of data about homes for sale in particular zip codes or cities nationwide–is one of the more obvious candidates for the search giant’s local and mobile efforts.
Its business and that of its competitors–which is largely based on advertising and lead-generation–has been growing quickly, despite the economic downturn in housing.
More interestingly, Trulia is deeply integrated into Google Maps, an arena the company recently targeted for growth with a series of announcements about new search features.
Trulia’s business model has always been a mystery to me. It has listings and … well, what else? Perhaps, in cities and towns where they don’t have such a robust multiple listing service as we have here in Boston there’s a need for it, but I have to say, I’ve never as much as once heard any real estate agent in Boston ever even mention the company’s name. (Zillow, at least a dozen times, but even they are a virtual non-entity.)
